mwbaElephas è uno dei due mwbqgeneri viventi della famiglia degli mwbgelefanti, mwbwElephantidae. Il genere contiene una singola specie sopravvissuta, l'mwcaelefante asiatico (mwcqElephas maximus).cite-ref-msw3-1-0[1]
In passato diverse specie appartenenti al genere Palaeoloxodon (oggi estinto), erano state identificate in questo genere, tra cui: mwdwmweaPalaeoloxodon recki, mweqmwegPalaeoloxodon antiquus e gli mwewelefanti nani mwfamwfqPalaeoloxodon falconeri ed mwfgmwfwPalaeoloxodon cypriotes. Il genere è anche strettamente correlato al genere mwgamwgqMammuthus, considerato tassonomicamente più vicino al genere Elephas che non al genere mwggmwgwLoxodonta al quale appartiene l'elefante africano.cite-ref-fleischer2001-2-0[2]
